Multiple studies layer up in this charcoal drawing. On the topmost layer, two studies of a female model—one in profile, one in three-quarters view—gaze towards the left edge of the paper. Fine contours in hard Austrian charcoal utilize lyrical lineweight to establish both gesture and form. Looser marks, including washes and cross hatches, establish shadow and mass.
