No Fishing Sign no. 113

2011
Cardboard, paint, ink
13" x 21"

This small No Fishing Sign is characterized by frenetic activity and layering. Loaded, broad brushstrokes smear red into grey, green into blue, and white into burgundy-brown. Hits of yellow, orange, and white peek out from behind. Black ink text is obscured into illegibility, while the prohibition of  “NO FISH,” written in heavy, white oil pastel, and crossed out by a single wavering ink line, sits on the surface. Two L-shaped blocks, one of black paint, and the other of bare cardboard, bracket the activity at the center of this painting.
