Wooden oar, lye, chemically melted hole

This Untitled Oar is covered in black paint and has been disfigured with lye. A narrow channel was carved in the paddle blade and then packed with pure lye pellets. The oar was left to set for several weeks until the chemicals caused the center mass of the paddle blade to drop out.

Produced as an artist-in-residence at Sculpture Space in Utica, NY.
