No Fishing Sign no. 105

2011
Cardboard, paint, ink
28.5" x 19.5"

A portion of this work’s cardboard surface has been peeled away, revealing corrugation and giving this large No Fishing Sign texture. An underpainted field of daffodil yellow grounds the composition. Multiple prohibitions have been partially obscured by overpainting, strikethroughs, and X’s in shades of white, red, and bright green. From top to bottom they read: “NO FISHING,” “NO PROPERTY,” “NO PEOPLE,” “NO MAJESTY,” “NO AMNESTY.” A stray “FISH” has been scratched into the center of the yellow underpainting, while another instance of the word “FISH,” written in marker, bleeds through the beige overpainting at the bottom edge.
